Weeks 29 and 30 - March 30, 2020

Yo Yo Yo Waz Good, Yall?!?!?

Things got p-retty crazy this last two weeks!!  Hence my absence.  So yall, guess what happened!??!  Out of NOWHERE, our mission president called Elder Hansen and me and explained that Elder Hansen would be leaving to go home the next day!!  They found a flight for him out of Ukraine to London!  And from London... well, they hadn't made plans for what would happen when they got to London, so I still honestly don't know if he is home at this point lol. They were just trying to get all the Senior Couples, along with Elders and Sisters who only had two transfers left, out of Ukraine due to the borders closing.  So pretty crazy stuff!!  I enjoyed my time with Elder Hansen SOOOO much!!  He was seriously such an amazing teacher who knew both the gospel and the Russian language like the back of his hand. He was amazing.  His love for the gospel literally shined so bright, it was so apparent.

Moving forward... what happened to me after Elder Hansen left you might ask??  Well I'll tell you (and this will explain why I got so busy all of a sudden that it took me a while to answer all your emails when I said I would be better about that lol)!  So I got put in a trio with the two other Elders in my district!!

When we did this, we combined our teaching and member pools.  We got busy, FAST!  The first day we were together, we had about 10-15 calls set up that day.  It was a grind, to say the least lol.  These two Elders were named Elder Glass (who has been with me since day one in Ukraine.  I love him SO flippin much!  He's the best and makes the best pizza lol) and then Elder Richards!  Elder Richards was new to our area as of this transfer.  He came to us from Odessa, just having been Zone Leader.  He truly showed us what good work was.  One night when we were falling asleep, I asked him about physics (He's been studying physics and is going to do more in college after this at like Stanford or something).  Anyways, lemme tell you guys, my mind has never been more confused or bobbling than after that conversation lol.  I was SHOOK.  I loved my time with Elder Hansen and Elder Glass so much, but it QUICKLY came to an end.  Why?  Well, because we learned we would all be getting sent home... we packed our bags and... JK got y'all, we still here ;).  Instead, I got a call from my mission president telling me that I would be transferred up to Sumy in the following few days!!  So BOOM!  I got packing and was out of there on Monday of last week.

SUMY!!  Sumy is the farthest zone north in the whole mission!!  It was a 3-hour-drive from my last area, so we had one of our nice church members drive us up!  It was so fun to talk to him the whole way and definitely good Russian practice.  We got some good laughs in on the way up haha.  From my understanding, Sumy is one of the areas with the most Ukrainian-preferred speaking people, along with sergic (which is when the people decide to intermix Russian and Ukrainian.  They pretty much use words from both language and then conjugate/case them with each others' grammatical casing and conjugations lol.  Should be pretty fun to experience when I get on the streets after this quarantine!!  If I didn't completely understand this language before, I sure am not going to now 😂.  Everything is gonna be awesome I love it haha).

I came to this area with my new companion, Elder Olsen!!  Elder Olsen and I were in the MTC together, which is super cool!  He was also Elder Glass's companion in the MTC!  So Elder Olsen and I have been here in Ukraine for the same amount of time!

Nether Elder Olsen nor I cooked much with our last companions (just because they loved to cook), so now we have been growing in that category haha.  I've always wanted to get into cooking, so I'm happy about that!!

Our district consists of us, and then two sister missionaries!! --one of whom is finishing her second transfer of training!! They are super awesome!  Right when we got in on Monday, we gave them the Sacrament, since there were no Elders to give it to them for the last two Sundays!  Lucky for us, they met us at the church so we could give it to them cuz we had to travel so far to get to Sumy that day.  However, this Sunday, we brought the sacrament to them!  Since we can't use public transportation right now, we made the walk.  Let me tell you... it was not a short walk.  An hour there and an hour back, apartment to apartment.  Every step of the way was worth it.  It really just puts a whole other outlook on the Sacrament.  My appreciation grows so much from this opportunity we have to bring it to them.

We got to their place, prayed, sang a hymn, blessed the Sacrament, shared testimonies, sung another hymn, prayed, mingled a little bit, and then made the trek back home haha. It was awesome.  It was also super cool because I got to see a ton of the area on the way there and back!!  Don't get much of that in quarantine!!  It was also pretty funny, on the way back we got stopped and talked to like four times--one of which was so random, but we got a laugh about it.  Two drunk guys were sitting by the lake we were walking by, and they just look over and say... "AY... AY" I respond... "Yes, hello??"  And then the man just says... "Corona Virus," and laughs lol.  I simply responded, "Haha, that was funny.  Thank you." 😂😂.

Moving along... The apartment here is way nice!!  It's so much bigger than my last one and actually has working appliances lol.  I don't feel nearly as confined lol. However, sometimes when you're using the hot water, it'll start to get all read/orange from the coppery pipes lol.  So, that's pretty interesting, especially when showering lol. Another fun fact, Elder Molnar, who I served with in my last area, served here during his training!!  Way cool!!

I have absolutely loved my time here thus far in Sumy.  I have loved calling the members and getting to know them more.  I can already tell there are so many great people here. One member who has been insanely fun to talk to is ольга. She is honestly REMARKABLE.  She's a BOB... the CUTEST bob.  The first day I call her and introduce myself, she's all energetic and happy.  I ask her what she's been up to in quarantine, and she legit like lists off the member list to Elder Olsen and I, explaining she's been calling everybody every day asking them how they are doing and everything!!  I was literally in awe!!  She then continues to tell us who we should call because she thinks they could be lonely, etc.  I quickly told her... "Sister Olga, you are literally the best church member!!  You should be the branch president or something!!"  She started laughing so hard and replied... "No no no, I'm too old, that's only for young people."  I laughed and replied, "No, no."  She continued to talk about her missionary efforts and then I couldn't hold it back.  I said... "Fine, maybe not Branch President, but you should definitely be the Tsar of Ukraine."  Again, she broke out laughing haha.

I asked Sister Olga what brought her to Sumy and just a little about her life.  She shared the COOLEST story with me.  She explained that she felt like she had to be here, like there were people here in which she needed to help.  She came to Sumy and when she was here she had this dream.  In the dream, she was in a garden.  She saw her parents and family all dressed in white asking her to help them.  She replied, "Yes! I will!"  She looked around and she saw more and more people, those of which she had never met before!!  They were calling out to her, also all dressed in white, asking her to save them!!  She told them she promised she would.  She is now in charge of the family history of our branch and works tirelessly on working with family history, preparing people for saving ordinances.  She explained to me how bad she wants to go to the temple to do all this.  She also explained to me how badly she wants to fly to Salt lake City to attend General Conference.  It's her dream.  This whole time on the call, I was absolutely just struck with what she was saying.  Her faith and sincerity of heart were so clear.  I already love her with all my heart, but yet to have met her.  I told her I cannot wait to see her walk through those branch doors and meet here when this quarantine is over.  She agreed and insisted we come over for borscht first thing when quarantine is over.  I'm totally taking up that offer.  Rumor has it that her borscht is out of this world lol.

There was another lady we started to talk to recently!!  She explained to us that she was an inactive member.  We asked if we could still continue to call her and share spiritual thoughts with her throughout the week!  She said yes!!  One of the thoughts we shared with her was about scripture study! We shared with her, and then I extended an invitation!  I asked her if she would try to read the Book of Mormon at least three times a week, for only at least 10 minutes!  I got an honest rejection out of that one, as she explained she didn't think she could do that.  She felt she had been inactive too long and could not go back to that.  I explained to her that no matter what her Heavenly Father loves her.  I explained to her that our Heavenly Father has all these blessings stored up for us, and that he wants to provide us with those blessings so bad, which of course he always does, but so many more can be received when we read the scriptures, showing him our love.  I reduced the invitation, trying to convince her and find a common ground on which we could meet.  I said, "Okay... how about this.  Sunday is the day that we give to our Lord and God correct?"  She agreed that that was true.  So then I continued and said... "Okay, then how about every Sunday I find one chapter in the Book of Mormon and send that chapter to you to read.  It will only take a couple minutes.  You can read it, and then when we call you during the week, we can talk about it!"  She agreed! It was so very awesome!!  We intend on following up on that invitation this week!!))

It's strange to say, I have only been here for a few days, and haven't seen much of this great city, but it truly feels like home.  I know it's where i'm supposed to be.  I have been able to speak with the members and people, more than ever before on my mission.  My desire to serve has grown.  I am so thankful for this opportunity to serve in this city of the Lord's vineyard.  The work continues everyone!!  I promise you that.  I invite you all to choose to be a part of that work, just as Sister Ольга (Olga) is choosing to be a part of it, diligently, every single day.

Thank you for all of your emails and support!!
Love you all tons,

Week 28 - March 16, 2020

Dear Everyone!

Well, it has come to our time!!  We are quarantined now!!  I won't highlight it too much just because I know how much it has already been talked about all over the world, and how it's already happening to pretty much everyone around the world haha.  But for an overview, we have been quarantined for about four days now, and we don't know for how much longer we will be!!  My guess is at least two weeks minimum!!

Our Mission President put some money into our accounts to go and buy up enough food storage for the meantime.   I honestly hope we bought enough food (or if we have enough, I feel like our tasty food is just going to run out fast lol)

(I'm honestly more nervous about running short on toilet paper, just because I need to use it to blow my nose so much lol). It's hard because I love to snack when at home, so I'm really pushing myself here not to 😂.  However, it's nice that we get to cook at home now!!  Before, we couldn't really cook at home just because our contacting area was in the opposite area of our home.

Seeing, also, that Ukraine is closing its borders this week, missionaries who were going home this transfer, got quickly shipped out on Saturday morning.  Apparently, Ukraine has like only one confirmed case of the virus, but that's also because Ukraine can't afford or doesn't have enough tests for the virus.  However, all will be well!!  I'm not overall worried.  The only thing I'm worried about is slowly losing my mind being inside each day with limited things to do.  It's not like when I was at home and could just watch, "The Office" five times through in one sitting😅😂.  Instead, we resort to re-watching church videos like the Safety Zone (it gets entertaining as sad as that sounds 😂), and now each Friday the new Book of Mormon videos!!  Woo!!

In the meantime, we have to sit in our house.  Oh how fun it is to be staring at a brick wall through our window all day!!😂

However, during quarantine I have been able to study (Russian especially) a lot more, and it's already helped so much!!  I'm really trying to get the grammar down so I can speak with it confidently.  I have started highlighting each case each time I see it as I read, distinguishing which is which.  It's actually quite entertaining and looks really cool!! I'll attach a picture haha.  I use a different color to highlight each case.  Along with that, I also just read out of Penguin (one of our grammar books).

Also, because we are quarantined, our version of missionary work has been modified!!  What we do now is call our members/interested people, via telephone, and share spiritual thoughts with them!!  Thus far, we have only had lessons with our members.  However, I have absolutely loved this opportunity!!  It has been so fun and honestly, I have felt the Spirit each time we have had the opportunity to share a message with our members through the phone.  They are always so happy to talk to us, and so appreciative.  We have honestly been more connected with our members more than ever before!!  It's way cool!!

Moving on, this week we had the coolest opportunity to hear from Brother Welch!!  Brother Welch served in Germany when he was a missionary, and on his mission discovered CHIASMUS.  I believe he has a documentary called, "Chiasmus in the Book of Mormon."  I highly encourage you all to go watch it.  The things he shared with us were seriously amazing.  Not to mention, listening to him explain parts of the Book of Mormon in correlation to each other was seriously insane.  He knows that book like the back of his hand.  Anyways, go watch the video.  It'll explain it all way better than I can.  LEGIT WATCH IT.  It goes even more so to prove the realness and truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. We were all shook by the end of the call with him haha.

Earlier this week, we had the amazing opportunity to have Zone Conference!!  It was so awesome, as usual!!  We took some time to study the conversion graphs of other countries to see the reason of such rapid growth of conversions to our church in countries like Mexico and Brazil, for example.  Our president explained that third generation families are one of the biggest impacts of these explosions and rises in the church.  That's why the youth of our church are so important!! Many third generation families are forming here in Ukraine, showing a bright future for our growth here!

Another topic that we focused a lot of our time on was commitment.  At conference, we all had the opportunity to share a scripture about commitment along with an experience or story about commitment.  I chose to share a scripture about the Savior's Atonement.  I explained how although our Savior suffered on earth during his ministry, going through so many trials, he never gave in.

He never gave in to the adversary, no matter how much he was tempted.  He continued in a straight path, teaching, healing, and uplifting.  And then finally, when it came to the Savior's Atonement, undoubtedly the hardest part of his earthly ministry, both mentally and physically, he didn't give in.  At ANY point, our Savior could have jumped ship, but instead, he held onto us.  He was committed to us.  And because he was committed to us, we can be committed to him.  I explained that when people stay true to their commitments, it then allows and helps others to keep their own commitments as well!!  It all goes around!!  I have seen examples of this throughout my life.  Some of which happen to be very personal to me.  I encourage you all to stay true and hold strongly to your commitments.  I can promise you that when you do, you will not only lead yourself to success, but perhaps more importantly, others to success as well.

I pray for all of your safety during these unique times, and of course, continue to love you all!!

P.S. ---- Feel free to hit me up these couple weeks with emails.  I got lots of spare time and it would truly help 😂❤. And seeing as that I got loads of free time, I will be better at responding)))))

Update on the Bug Condition from Elder Wilde:  "Yes, these roly-polys are the worse!  They are still all over and crawling around!  Not to mention, I have seen a few spiders, and that's where I cross the line!! It's starting to get a lot warmer here recently, and we didn't have an overall bad winter."

Weeks 26 and 27 - March 9, 2020

Hello, all!!

Man, do I have some exciting little updates for you all!!  First... I high key almost sprained my ankle the other week!!  Elder Hansen and I were running to go and get Анатолий (the church member who we get to carry down the stairs of his apartment in a wheelchair haha).  Anyways, so were going to the metro and we realized we forgot our wallet which has our metro card on it!!  So we ran back home, and at this point we're pretty late, so we're sprinting down the metro stairs trying to catch the metro in time.  As I'm going down the stairs, my foot caught on the last one and my ankle twisted pretty bad, and it's fair to say it hurts WAY BAD.  Luckily, this BOB was right there and she helped me up 😂😂 She was so cute.  She grabbed my arm and was like "Давай... помочь."  She was also wearing a Naruto jacket, so that's how you know she was legit 😂.  We got there and helped Анатолий, and within a week's time, my ankle was better haha.

Next fun thing!!  For some reason, my side of the room is absolutely INFESTED with roly-polys!  I repeat... MY SIDE! Not Elder Hansen's!!  First of all, I didn't even know roly-poly infestation was a thing.  Second of all, why the heck are they only on my side of the room?!?!  It all began as follows... If you are scared of insects, especially roly-polys, don't read ahead...  So Elder Hansen and I get home from a day of work, and I get in my bed, AND THERE'S LIKE 3 ROLY-POLYS JUST CRAWLING AROUND IN MY BED!!  I'm just like "Oh heckkkk no" and start to squish them all and throw them away.  Then I turn to the wall, and legit those roly-polys I just killed, their parents, kids, extended family, AND friends are just posted up on my wall!  I went to town on them.  Over the days, I still continue to find them on my wall or crawling in my bed.  I feel like my life is at stake.  I don't know if this is a sign that I need to repent or something, but whatever it is, I'm not liking it.  That's not even the worst of it.  One of the roly-polys even had the audacity to try to crawl into my patriarchal blessing!!  Who does that!!  That's private stuff!!  But I was blessed from above in this case, because before the roly-poly could get in, he got stuck on the sticky part that seals the envelope shut, and laid there dead 😂, so all in all, I at least need to give praise to that 😀😂.

Lastly, our toilet seat broke off, so that's fun.  It has sure been a week of laughs and good memories haha.

Lastly, this week we had District Conference!!  I had the chance to sit next to the CUTEST Bob ever when the meeting started (Here, instead of missionaries sitting together, we all split it up and go sit with random people in the room, so I had chosen her)(also, all bobs are cute so I am sorry for the overuse.  Trust me you would all love them). Mid-conference she pulled out some sweets and shared with me.. Bless up haha.  Afterwards, she was thanking me for sitting with her and saying what a pleasure it was.  I responded likewise (although I was sorting the words and grammar out for it 10 minutes before the conference was ending 😂).

However, at that conference President Wirthlin provided us with a great message!!  He explained that in his youth, he had taken up the activity of parachuting!!  He explained that every single time when the class starts, the teacher would explain the rules and safety lines for when they made their jumps.  He would say it once, twice, three times, every single lesson.  President Wirthlin, at the time, found the constant repetition of this somewhat exhausting.  "Why does he need to keep repeating this, we get it already!"

It wasn't until one day when he made that jump from the airplane, till he realized why.  He jumped and noticed that his parachute wasn't working the way it should!!  He was falling quickly and was going to hit the ground hard.  However, he then remembered the instructions he had received, not once, not twice, not three times, but MANY times from his teacher.  He reached for the reserve shoot on his chest, and like instructed, starting slowly feeding it out, as he held onto it tightly against his chest, again, as instructed.  He landed safely, luckily, as hoped, in one piece.  He explained, as our Heavenly father and his son Jesus Christ tell us to do something in the scriptures, we listen.  If they do a second time, we listen! If they do a 3rd time a 4th a 5th a 6th, we continue to listen!!  Their words are important.  They are given to us to direct us away from danger and onto the right path.  They are meant to save us, and they will, when we listen.  I invite you all, as you ponder and study the scriptures to continue and search for the instruction of the Savior, and listen to that instruction.  This will bless your lives!!

Side note!  Tomorrow is Zone Conference and I'm so excited WOOO!!  Zone conference is the best.  Can't wait to tell you all about it!!

Love you tons!!
